Student Profiles
Wing Kai Alfred Leung, Hong Kong
BSc Accounting & Financial Management, DPS
Alfred is in the final year of his degree after completing his first two years on campus and his third year gaining practical accounting experience at a retail pharmacy based in Manchester. Alfred found out about Loughborough at a Universities exhibition in Hong Kong:
“…the high ranking of a British University is very important to students from Hong Kong so Loughborough was a good choice in that respect. My early experience of Loughborough was excellent. Firstly, there was the Heathrow pick up service which took me directly to my accommodation - and Royce Hall, where I stayed, has a great atmosphere. I joined the International Students Association (ISA) and the Volleyball Club so I quickly made plenty of international and British friends.
“The course I’m doing is brilliant. The teaching staff are helpful and have great enthusiasm with their subjects. The best thing about my course is the placement work which meant I spent 12 months working in the management accounting and internal audit functions of a British company. I was able to apply what I have learnt on my degree to a practical business situation and it also gave me ideas on what employment I would like to pursue in the future.
“I would definitely recommend Loughborough because I have enjoyed my time here so much! My good memories come from the great atmosphere and social life, and the skills I have gained from the structured course and placement work. Loughborough is a Top 10 University which is highly marketable on the CV. There is lots of support for international students (international office, ISA, English Language Support, academic staff, etc) and we have the best sports reputation and facilities in a UK University. Also, the rail links to big cities like Nottingham, Leicester and London are very convenient.
“You may not be able to pronounce ‘Loughborough’ before coming here, but you will definitely know what ‘Loughborough’ means to you when you leave!”

Christopher Drew, Hong Kong
BSc Geography
Chris enjoyed the cosmopolitan and social atmosphere of Hong Kong and these factors were important to him when deciding which University to study. He has always been a keen sportsman – he played in the Under 19s Rugby World Cup in 2003 for Hong Kong - so the ability to continue this at some level was important. Chris decided he wanted to study at a British University due to the reputation of UK qualifications/education with employers around the world. He is now a second year Geography undergraduate. Chris says:
“…During my final years of A levels, I researched a number of Universities and Loughborough had a high academic standard. During my visit in the summer to Loughborough, I was impressed by the spacious and open-styled campus. The accommodation also appeared very attractive as was the strong sporting reputation.
“I had no problem settling down at Loughborough University. I have made many friends and I think the facilities on campus are superb – the Student Union, for example, houses convenience stores, opticians, dentists, cafes and bars. And I also like the location of Loughborough in terms of being able to see much of the UK. In the past, I have bought an eight-day rail pass and visited much of England including London, Cambridge, Liverpool, Manchester and Durham.
“If you are an International Student who is thinking about coming to Loughborough, I recommend the University and I suggest you join the International Students Association here as soon as you arrive. It is well-organised and new students will have no trouble finding others from their home country as well as new friends from other countries. The ISA organises many social events throughout the year such as parties, outings, sports events and the annual International Day”.
