Our Commitment to Excellence

Research underpins all scholarly activity. We aim to produce internationally excellent research across the range of our activities that contributes to theory, practice, policy or a combination of these.

Our specific objectives are to develop a strong research environment, so that staff have the resources to pursue and develop their own research agendas and disseminate that research through academic outlets recognised as internationally excellent and through practitioner/policy outputs that have significant practical impact.

Our staff are organised into five major Research Groups that provide a focus for our activity, our candidates on the PhD, MPhil and MRes programmes, and any consultancy or commissioned research projects we undertake for Government departments or businesses.

Our staff publish in leading peer-reviewed journals, such as IIE Transactions, Journal of Empirical Finance, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Marketing Science and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes.

Many staff in the School occupy editorial positions or are represented on the editorial boards of prestigious journals, such as the British Accounting Review, British Journal of Management, European Management Journal, International Marketing Review, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Occupational & Organizational Psychology, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Management Accounting Research and Service Industries Journal, as well as represented in professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and the British Psychological Society.

Research Groups

The Business School has approximately 62 academic staff, including 22 Professors, engaged in research programmes supported by a dedicated research team. Researchers working in broadly similar fields of interest are grouped under the relevant Research Groups which are supported by the Research Committee of the Business School.

Doctoral Programme

The Doctoral Programme is ESRC-recognised and forms an integral part of the School’s overall research capability with research students being integrated within the Research Groups best matching their areas of interest.

Research Output

The School has an active Research Seminar Series which provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and research experiences. Attendance at international conferences and symposia is actively encouraged as are collaborative links with other academic institutions, business organisations and governmental agencies.
