Launch for new international sports management MBA a success

The School of Business and Economics launched yesterday its International Sports Management MBA at ParalympicsGB House in London.

Attendees from Olympic and Paralympic organisations, sports governing bodies and private sector companies arrived at GB House next to Olympic Park amidst the buzz of the Paralympics opening day. Representatives from the House of Lords, UK Anti-Doping, Lawn Tennis Association, senior CEOs from S&P Architects, Sports Aid, the Chair of the Special Olympics and the Head of Lloyds TSB 2012 were just a few of the guests attending the launch.

The launch afforded attendees the opportunity to hear Professor Jim Saker, Associate Dean of Enterprise at the SBE, and from Andy Reed OBE, Director of Saje Impact and Sports Think Tank, who has been instrumental in helping shape the programme, describe in detail how the programme will be delivered, what the modules will cover, why Loughborough is perfectly placed to deliver such a high level programme and the influence they see the programme having in the future of the sporting industry.

“This is not simply an MBA with a sports element,” said Professor Saker. “This is an MBA that is immersed in the sports sector, so that every module, every element of the programme is centred around sport and the global sporting industry. Our HR module will cover volunteering, for instance – not an element on regular MBAs, but part of ours because it’s integral to many human resource departments in sport.”

Andy Reed said: “I am proud to be associated with the Loughborough MBA programme. I know from my 20 years of association with Loughborough University of its quality and reputation globally. For me this MBA is long overdue – combining the business skills required in the modern sports world with the quality we come to expect from the Loughborough approach to sporting excellence.”

With an induction date of January 2013, the International Sports Management MBA is aimed at people working in the sports sector, sports and sports-related organisations and/or those looking to pursue a career in a senior managerial role within the sports sector. With sports-specific modules on media management, technology and innovation, as well as the fundamentals of management and commerce, the programme will be delivered through a series of three- or four-day blocks spread over a two-year period.
