International student profiles
Low Chung King
BSc Commercial Management & Quantity Surveying
King gained automatic entry onto the second year of his course after completing a Quantity Surveying Diploma at Taylor’s College, Malaysia. King, a previous winner of the top student prize in his department for three consecutive years at Taylor’s College, was awarded a Loughborough Scholarship for his high academic merit. The photograph shows King accepting his scholarship from the Vice-Chancellor of Loughborough University, Professor Sir David Wallace:
“…I have always had strong interests towards construction and am passionate about every facet of the industry. In fact, my family is operating a business supplying assorted building materials to local dealers. I decided ever since I graduated from high school that I wanted to be a Quantity Surveyor because this is such a challenging and competitive role that enables me to become actively involved with construction, architecture, management, contracts and all aspects of this fast-paced industry. In the past two years, Taylor’s College has prepared me an excellent overview of Quantity Surveying. I believe it is now important to expand my knowledge on the subject with another prestigious institution to be able to compete with others in the industry.”
“I chose Loughborough University for many reasons. Firstly, it is one of the most prestigious universities in the United Kingdom with a prominent ranking in Quantity Surveying. In fact, my department, Civil & Building, topped the rankings in the Times Good University Guide 2006 which significantly convinced me to join Loughborough. When I researched further, I found out the undergraduate programme at Loughborough is staunchly supported by some of the leading construction companies in the business and I hope to gain some extra work placement experience with one of the big names. I also chose Loughborough because of it’s influence, and the trust that has been placed in the name, amongst professionals.”
“I arrived here at Loughborough a day before the residence hall became available, and I met some of the Hall committee members who kindly assisted me during my stay at Loughborough! Since then, everything went well and the facilities here are great. It is a big campus with a well-resourced library, complete with research work of previous Masters and PhD students. Not to mention the tremendous sports facilities, they are amongst the best in the UK, and are accessible to all students at Loughborough. I play in the Student Table Tennis team and we are currently top of the league.
“The students and the faculty here at Loughborough have given me the confidence to work and study competitively. I think that all of my coursemates are talented, enthusiastic, at the same time, they are sponsored by some of the most well-known international construction companies. That really motivates me to work to higher professional standards and ultimately, reach my goal in the field. There is also a great network of contacts within the construction and engineering field which Loughborough has access to. At Loughborough, I can communicate with people of different nationalities with my multilingual ability. Most importantly, the people here are friendly and are always willing to help.”
“I would recommend Loughborough to my friends back in Malaysia and other International students for all the aforementioned reasons. Also, Loughborough is a high-profile institution with grand facilities and an excellent study environment, not to mention, reasonable living costs (compared to other UK cities)! If you want to continue your studies in the UK, look no further, Loughborough has everything you are hunting for”.
