Razan Dzafirah Haji Zaini

Brunei Darussalam

BSc Criminology and Social Policy

Razan has just begun her undergraduate study at Loughborough University but has already settled into her new home and is thoroughly enjoying her programme. So much so, Razan would like to share her impressions of Loughborough University with others here:

"Being the eldest of 6 siblings I had a tough roll and I had to set a good example for my brothers and sister to follow. Being able to pursue my studies at Loughborough has always been my dream and I know I have done my parents proud so far. My parents are, of course, the most dominant figures in my life and, since they both studied abroad in their respective fields, I had big shoes to fill. The proudest achievement in my life has been achieving the top ten in the world award for Sociology and I am keen to push myself to further achievements. I know that Loughborough University can finally be a place for me to do that.

"I chose Loughborough University because it has always been my dream university. As clichéd as that may sound, it is actually true. Plus it so happened that Loughborough is top in the field for Criminology which is a bonus on my part. Another reason why Loughborough was the university for me is because it has the best sports and athletic organizations. Being an active girl and eager to try new things I knew that this would be perfect for me while studying Criminology. Besides, it's a warm community here in Loughborough, what with the other hundred of Bruneians and Malaysians, they are all friendly. I don't have to worry about homesickness at all. It's a perfect place for student life.

"During my first week I literally wouldn't go anywhere without the campus map – honestly! It's a huge place. But what surprised me is that the other students here actually wouldn't mind helping me around. Since I missed my department induction day (because I couldn't book an earlier flight), the lecturers were incredibly helpful. The librarians and department staff have been helping me since day one. They explained to me what I've missed and what choices I need to make for my modules. I'm taking Beginner's Mandarin and it's my favourite lecture of all. This is interesting because I get to take up a foreign language as a module within the Criminology Course. It's just perfect!

"After I’ve completed my course I want to work in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) back in Brunei. Since I have done a work placement there before coming to the UK, it has exposed me to what I would encounter eventually being a Criminology graduate. Seeing what they actually do has convinced me to join the CID team. But I am also hoping to pursue further education after graduating. Hopefully to a Master’s programme.

"Loughborough University is definitely the best place to choose and I would recommend it to other international students anytime. It has given me a good kick start and I am pretty sure it will do the same for you. Loughborough would not be a disappointment at all."
