Inaugural lectures

Wednesday 8th February, 2012 at 5pm – Lecture Theatre SMB.0.14 (Stewart Mason Building)

From Laboratory to Clinic - Analytical Chemistry in Action

Professor Barry Sharp, Department of Chemistry

Analytical Chemistry, or Analytical Science as it’s known in the broader scientific community, is concerned with chemical measurements.  These measurements are used in everything from simple colour tests, such as litmus paper acidity tests, to the use of multi-million pound instruments developed by multidisciplinary collaborations.

Analytical chemistry plays a vital role in all aspects of modern life, in trade, industry, consumer protection, environmental research, biology and medicine, and ensures that ‘it does what it says on the tin’.

In this lecture, Professor Sharp will describe some of his work on developing analytical techniques based on laser sampling and mass spectrometry and their applications in cancer research, transplant surgery and ophthalmology.
