On 22/May/2013 at 5.00 pm. Howard Barker is our guest speaker for this year's Departmental Lecture. The title of his talk is 'Staging the Unforgivable'. Howard Barker has written plays for stage and radio, and marionettes. He has also written librettos for opera, both in England and Europe. He is a published poet and theorist of theatre, whose best known work is probably Death, The One, and The Art of Theatre. Last year his classic text Scenes from an Execution was revived at the National Theatre with Fiona Shaw. Over four decades he has written for The Royal Court, The Royal Shakespeare Company, and national theatres in many European countries. His own theatre company, The Wrestling School, has toured new and revived works throughout Europe. His best known plays are Victory, The Castle, Gertrude - The Cry, and The Possibilities. His drawings and paintings are in collections both at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and in regional museums in France.

Radar - Public Domestic (Emma Smith) - from 26/May/2013 to 26/May/2013

From 26/May/2013 to 26/May/2013. Artist Emma Smith concludes her Radar commission with a life-size, artwork-meets-boardgame in which players engage in a strategic social experiment as they meet, converse, negotiate and navigate their way through the Public Domestic. Developed out of an extended residency in which Emma explored the domestic environments of the University as spaces of exchange and knowledge production, Public Domestic plays with our perceptions and understanding of social constructs and the nature of the individual as they are assimilated into a collective way of living. Modelled on the aesthetics of kitchen floor tiles, this giant board game provides a meeting point or framework for two or more players to collectively find a way off the board. Working to a set of instructions and through a process of negotiation the players are asked to develop co-operative relationships with each other based on their differences rather than similarities in order to move their way across the board. The game is only complete when ALL the players have left the board, placing the emphasis for success on a duty of care to assist one another and a sharing of differences. Public Domestic has been developed through conversations with academics from the University’s Social Sciences department and Design School, and through a programme of ‘evening classes’ conceived in collaboration with a core group of students.

Inaugural Lecture: Professor Lee Miles - Painful Choices? Nation States and European Integration - 29/May/2013 at 5pm, light refreshments served from 4:30pm

On 29/May/2013 at 5pm, light refreshments served from 4:30pm. Professor Lee Miles, Department of Politics, History and International Relations 2013 represents the 40th anniversary since Britain, Denmark and Ireland have been members of the European Union (EU). In many respects, the governments of all three countries have often been criticised for lacking coherence in their approaches towards handling the challenges of participating in European integration, and in pursuing wider foreign policy objectives. Have governments been confronted by almost continual ‘painful choices’? Do broader concepts like ‘painful choice’ help us to understand why European integration continues to remain challenging for governments more generally? In this lecture, Professor Miles draws on his extensive research on the Nordic Countries, and combines Prospect Theory - taken from the realms of Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA) - to explain why the governments and elites of nation states are often resistant to approaching important decisions about their future and often complex relationships with the evolving European Union (EU).

On 11/June/2013 at 6:30pm. The Department of Politics, History and International Relations is hosting a screening of the harrowing 'infanticide' documentary film, It's a Girl'. In India and China, where sons are valued and daughters are burdens, millions of babies are killed, abandoned or selectively aborted, simply because they are girls. The result of longstanding traditions and governmental policies, this devaluation of females has led to rampant violence against women and a growing female 'gendercide'. The documentary is widely acclaimed and is generating much discussion where it is shown. The evening will consist of the screening of the documentary at 6:30pm, followed by further discussion with a panel of experts from various Universities, including Edinburgh University and the University of Bristol.
Thermal Protection Materials and Systems: Past, Present and Future - from 13/June/2013 to 13/June/2013

From 13/June/2013 to 13/June/2013. Dr. Sylvia M. Johnson NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett field, CA, USA Thermal protection materials and systems (TPS) protect vehicles from the heat generated when entering a planetary atmosphere. NASA has developed many TPS systems over the years for vehicles ranging from planetary probes to crewed vehicles. The goal for all TPS is efficient and reliable performance. Efficient means using the right material for the environment and minimizing the mass of the heat shield without compromising safety. Efficiency is critical if the payload such as science experiments is to be maximized on a particular vehicle. Reliable means that we understand and can predict the performance of the material. The actual selection of the TPS depends on the vehicle shape and size, the cargo, the destination and the speed and angle of entry. Different TPS solutions are required for different locations on a vehicle. Although much characterization and testing of materials is performed to qualify and certify them for flight, it is not possible to completely recreate the reentry conditions in test facilities and flight-testing is expensive and again not entirely representative. This seminar will discuss the development of both reusable and ablative TPS at NASA-Ames. Reusable materials include those flown on shuttles while ablators include the materials flown on the recent MSL mission to Mars. The importance of characterizing materials will be discussed, especially with regard to ablators and to ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTCs). Needs and approaches to developing new TPS for upcoming and distant NASA missions will also be discussed. These include new conformable and woven materials and the progress being made in computation and modeling.

On 19/June/2013 at 5pm, light refreshments served from 4:30pm. Professor Mo Song, Department of Materials In the manipulation of new materialistic properties, Nanotechnology has been one of the key players in the 21st century. In this lecture, Professor Song will discuss his research on polymer nanocomposites, a part of nanotechnology where nanofillers are added to polymer material to help reinforce and enhance its performance. Nanocomposite technology is applicable to a wide range of polymers from thermoplastics and thermosets to elastomers. Nanoscale materials are recognised as unique because they produce qualitatively new behaviour when compared with their macroscopic counterparts. Polymer materials have sometimes struggled without nanotechnology; when the domain size within the materials becomes comparable with the physical length scale, such as segments of a polymer macromolecule, the expected physical responses to any external disturbance does not follow the established principles. Following his recent years in this research area, Professor Song will explore the recent developments of polymer nanocomposite, the advantages and benefits to our lives it can bring, and what the future might hold for this debated technology.

RSPB Talk on The RSPB's Natural Secrets by Peter Holden MBE - 10/January/2014 at 7.45 pm

On 10/January/2014 at 7.45 pm. Peter Holden has been an RSPB member for 50 years and worked for 40 years at The Lodge. Following on from his lecture in 2012 (A Celebration of Birds) he will tell us that it's in not only birds that benefit from the RSPB's works. This talk will look at many of the other forms of wildlife that can be found on and around the reserves - from rare hoverflies to magnificent Red Deer and from the Angel-wings Fungus to the Scottish Primrose. Some are common if you know where to look, but others are rare and depend on the RSPB for their future in the UK. With over 13,000 species of wildlife found on the RSPB's reserves no visit should ever be dull - even when the birds don't show! The Loughborough Group is privileged to be one of the few groups who are able to host him for this talk. "Peter Holden is something of a legend within RSPB circles and his presentations are always hugely entertaining and informative. We would like anyone with an interest in wildlife to come along whether or not they are a member of the RSPB. Everyone is very welcome!" Price: £3 Group Members, £3.50 Non members, LU students with SU card gratis
