Course information
Combined honours courses allow you to pursue an interest in a second academic discipline whilst at the same time obtaining a thorough grounding in modern economics.
Why Choose Us?
- Consistently rated as a Top-10 UK Business School
- Among just 1% of Business Schools in the world to be EQUIS accredited
(by the European Foundation for Management Development) - 95% of our Economics research was rated of international standard by the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise
Economic policy is shaped by a combination of economic, political, social and geographical factors, and you will be equipped to analyse these influences at work in economies in the modern world.
Many of our teaching staff are invited by governments and companies across the world to advise on issues of policy and practice.
Internationally recognised for research, and often coming from industry, they will provide you with an in-depth knowledge of the challenges confronting business, industry, financial institutions, governments and individuals.
Teaching and Learning Methods
We are committed to helping you stand out in the increasingly competitive graduate job market and many of our graduates go on to enjoy rewarding careers with major international companies.
Our high quality courses develop skills valued by employers including independent learning and research, analytical skills, group work, presentation skills, project work, computer skills and numeracy. Our wide variety of optional modules enables students to focus on areas related to their career aspirations.
Lectures are supported by online resources, tutorials, workshops, seminars and discussion groups. Some tutorials are streamed according to prior qualifications in mathematics and economics.
Assessment
Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination.
Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, contribution in tutorials, group work, class tests, problem-sheets and computer-based exercises.
Placement Year and Study Abroad
You can choose to extend your degree and boost your employability by opting to study abroad for a year between the second and final year of your degree course, or by taking a year-long salaried professional placement to build your work experience.
Satisfactory completion of either of these options results in a Diploma in International Studies (DIntS) for those studying aboard, or a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) for those doing a placement in addition to your degree on graduation.
Studying abroad offers a wonderful opportunity to enhance language skills and experience living abroad. Exchange opportunities currently exist in Germany, Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, Greece and Italy in Europe, as well as in Hong Kong (China), Toronto (Canada), Purdue (USA) and Perth and Sydney (Australia).
Our dedicated placements office has contacts with over 250 companies worldwide who regularly target our students to recruit for salaried placement positions, many of whom are offered a job after their degree.
Enterprise Ethos
Enterprise is a key part of the Loughborough experience and can really boost your job prospects. All our business degrees include a module to develop our students’ enterprise and employability skills.
Student Enterprise thrives on campus with a range of extra-curricular activities including business planning competitions, events, and support services for students with real business ideas.
Selection
Selection interviews are not normally held, and offers of places are made on the basis of your UCAS form, particularly your referee’s report and previous examination performances. Candidates who are offered a place are invited to visit the School and meet staff on one of several Visit Days.
Career Prospects
Graduates enter a wide range of careers, often within areas such as banking, accountancy and finance, while others are employed in more general management positions.
