Undergraduate study 2014 prospectus

Civil and Building Engineering

MEng (Hons) / BEng (Hons)

Civil Engineering

2014

Year of entry

Course information

The School offers four Civil Engineering courses: an MEng consisting of 4 years full-time study, a BEng of 3 years full-time study, and two equivalent sandwich courses, each of which includes a period spent in industry after two years academic work and leads to the appropriate degree award plus a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS).

Why Choose Us?

  • Ranked 4th in UK for Civil Engineering (Guardian University Guide 2013)
  • Accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, and Institution of Highways and Transportation by the JBM
  • Winner of prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize (2007)
  • 95% of students in work / study within six months of graduation (UNISTATS)

Suitably qualified students may enrol directly on the MEng course. Students on the BEng course may transfer to the MEng at the end of Year 2, subject to satisfactory performance.

The courses also offer sponsorship, an outdoor management course and give you the opportunity to study at an overseas university either in Europe, the USA, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong or Australia for up to six months in your final year.

Sponsorship Scheme

All MEng students, and students who have passed the first year of the BEng course, have the opportunity to apply for sponsorship, through the school, to a consortium of leading UK companies.

Sponsorship will provide you with a bursary during your studies, summer placement work if you want it and employment for a twelve month period of industrial training.

Industrial Training

Students following one of the sandwich courses spend a year in industry immediately after Year 2. Upon satisfactory completion of this industrial training, they are eligible for the additional award of the Diploma in Industrial Studies.

If you are not sponsored, the School will assist you in finding a suitable training place. Those who choose not to take the sandwich year are encouraged to undertake periods of practical training with construction organisations during the long vacations.

Professional Recognition

The Civil Engineering courses are accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Highways and Transportation by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM). The courses meet the current UK-SPEC requirements of the Engineering Council (ECUK).

Specifically, the BEng is accredited as:

  • Fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
  • Partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) - a course of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng

Specifically, the MEng is accredited as:

  • Fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng)

See www.jbm.org.uk for further information.

Selection

Conditional offers are made based on application forms. All applicants who are made an offer are invited to visit the school either on a Wednesday or Saturday during term-time.

Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of examinations, coursework, projects, presentations, technical reports and field work.
