National Student Survey 2012
With about 600 students and more than 30 academic, technical, and support staff, the Department of English and Drama is large enough to promote a wide range of activities and interests while remaining welcoming and informal.
We pride ourselves on being a dynamic and international community, with students not only from across the British Isles, but also Asia, North America and the European mainland.
Our English courses offer a large variety of options on literature from the Renaissance to the present day.
Many of these grow out of the current research interests of the academic staff, making it possible for us to introduce students to the latest thinking in areas as diverse as the staging of Shakespeare, Film Studies, the Analysis of Poetry, and Language and Society. There are also modules in Creative Writing, with support from visiting professional writers.
Our Drama courses combine theoretical study and practical performance, and are distinguished by the Department’s expertise in theatrical, cultural and technical aspects of performance.
Theatre facilities, including specialist equipment in TV sound and lighting, are outstanding. Central to the ethos of the Drama courses is group work and a close community which is both friendly and intellectually stimulating.
Our courses enable you to study for a selected period of time in international destinations such as the USA, Canada, Singapore and continental Europe. Please see individual courses for details.
The Department also offers a number of joint honours courses with English and another subject.
New full-time undergraduate students who are permanently resident in countries outside the European Union may receive a Tuition Fee Bursary of £1,000 per annum. There is also a special Tuition Fee Bursary of £1,000 per annum for applicants from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and PR China for ‘Creativity and Academic Excellence’.
If students perform well, each Bursary will be renewed for the normal minimum duration of the three-year course. The Bursary will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account. The Bursaries will be for international students accepted on all undergraduate courses, excluding English (part-time).
