Course information
The Mathematics and Management course is evenly divided between the two main subject areas, except in the first year when mathematics accounts for two-thirds of the course.
It draws upon the expertise of both the Mathematical Sciences Department and the University’s School of Business and Economics.
Why Choose Us?
- 1st in the UK for employability of Business and Management graduates (Guardian University Guide 2013)
- Consistently rated as a Top-10 UK Business School
- Award-winning Mathematics Learning Support Centre
It is designed to appeal to students who are mathematically inclined and who also wish to develop a knowledge of management topics such as human resources management, marketing, company finance and strategic management.
The problem-solving skills which are strongly developed in the mathematics section and the management skills that will also be acquired make graduates highly attractive to a wide range of employers.
Industrial Placements
All our courses are available as either full-time or sandwich courses, with the sandwich course including an extra year spent on professional training in an industrial, commercial or research establishment. The academic content of a full-time and a sandwich course is identical.
Satisfactory completion of the professional training in the sandwich course leads to the award of the Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS).
A variety of industrial, commercial and research companies have received our students in recent years and good relations have been established between these companies and the Mathematical Sciences Department.
Examples include Advantica, Ernst & Young, IBM, Aston Martin Lagonda, ICI, Hitachi and GSK. We are able to assist you to obtain suitable placements but the final responsibility rests with you.
Study Abroad
If you choose one of our sandwich courses, an alternative to professional training is a year spent studying at a university in another country through a student exchange scheme, leading to the award of the Diploma in International Studies (DIntS).
We currently have exchange agreements with universities in: France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Lithuania, Australia, Canada.
Career Prospects
Recent graduate destinations include: Microsoft, Cambridge County Council, Ten 3, Bloomberg, Santander, Arts Alliance Media, Deloitte, KPGM, Millennium Media.
Course structure
Year 1
In the first year you will take double modules in the core mathematical topics of Calculus and Linear Algebra; the remaining Mathematics topics include introductory modules in Probability and Statistics and Mathematical Computing as well as pure mathematics modules.

Year 2
In the second year there are six compulsory Management modules, covering finance, marketing, decision making and organisational behaviour.
Compulsory Mathematics modules cover probability and statistics, differential equations and applied mathematics, and there is also a choice of optional modules on topics in pure mathematics and numerical methods.
Year 3
In the final year there is a compulsory module on Strategic Management and a wide choice of optional modules in all areas of Mathematics and Management.
