Course information

The degree course studies the biomechanical, pedagogical, physiological, psychological, and sociological influences on human performance during the preparation for, the participation in, and the recovery from sport and exercise.

Relevant A-Level subjects for this degree course includes; biology/human biology, chemistry, english, history, mathematics, physics, psychology and sociology.

Gymnastics Pathway

A gymnastics pathway has been introduced within the BSc Honours Sport and Exercise Science degree.

The gymnastics pathway provides the appropriate sports science to underpin the scientific study of gymnastics and gymnastics coaching, along with a number of modules focused specifically on gymnastics.

These include a research project on gymnastics and a taught module on the applications of gymnastics research to coaching.

Professional Placements and Study Abroad

Loughborough has a long history of supporting students with paid work placements in business or industry in the UK or overseas, usually after your second year of study.

It is not compulsory but students gain enormously from the experience and typically, after completing their studies at university, are more likely to progress into high quality graduate employment (Loughborough University First Degree Destination Data (DLHE) 2011).

Course structure

Year 1

Students will take introductory modules in:

• Biomechanics of Sport
• Exercise Physiology
• Fitness and Training
• IT for Sport and Exercise Science
• Sociology of Sport
• Sport, Exercise and Health Pedagogies
• Sport and Exercise Psychology

Also compulsory is Teaching and Coaching 1 – a practical and theoretical study of techniques and strategies, and the coaching of these, in a range of sports.

Further optional modules are available within the course which include, for example, Basic Biological Psychology, Basic Biochemistry, Olympic Studies, and Sport Industries.

Modules up to 20 credits can be selected from outside the course.

Year 2

Modules Teaching and Coaching 2 and Research Skills are compulsory. You then select from a list of optional modules reflecting such areas as:

• Acquiring Movement Skills
• Exercise Biochemistry
• Exercise, Health and Environmental Physiology
• Marketing and Management
• Nutrition, Health and Sports Performance
• Physical Activity and Health
• Sociology of Sport
• Sports Biomechanics
• Sport and Exercise Pedagogy
• Sport and Exercise Psychology
• Structural Kinesiology

Modules up to 20 credits can be selected from outside the course.

Year 3 or 4

Students select options from modules available in a similar range of discipline areas to those outlined for Year 2. In addition there is an optional module in Applied Sport Science involving a multi-disciplinary in-depth study of one sport.

You may also opt to undertake a substantial Research Project module that will involve investigating a sport and exercise science topic in which you have developed a particular interest.

Modules up to 20 credits can be selected from outside the course.
